Whenever one passes by Old Bailey Street, one’s eyes would be drawn to the tall walls, imaging how the world behind the wall is. After the closing of the Victoria Prison, one finally has the chance to enter this “Forbidden Palace” of Hong Kong, and witness prison life in the old days.
The first prison to be built from lasting materials was located near Victoria Prison. The remaining rock walls now west of Old Bailey Street are very possibly the ruins of this prison. These walls now no longer held prisoners, and in its place is a high-rise married quarters of the police force.
