Broadcasting Work Before 1970
The first time Chung Wai Ming took part in radio work was in 1947 when he was 17. In 1949, when Radio Rediffusion was inaugurated, the Shan Yue Alumni Club to which he belonged formed an amateur drama group to perform on radio. Seeing how popular radio drama was, Rediffusion produced a large number of dramas including detective stories, romances, historical plays and folk tales, thus providing many opportunities for Chung to perform. In 1955, he left Rediffusion to work for the Hong Kong Radio Broadcasting Unit of the US Information Services (USIS). His main duty was to help Raymond Chow Man Wai produce different kinds of programmes that included magazines, drama, sports and even on location reporting. In 1961, he was sent to Washington D.C to train with the Voice of America.
Returning six months later, he continued working at the USIS, but for the next ten years, he also freelanced at different radio stations--Commercial Radio, Radio Hong Kong and Rediffusion—acting in radio dramas as well as taking part in other types of programmes.
