The Rediffusion Broadcasting Company was established in Hong Kong in 1949 as a commercial broadcaster. Chung Wai Ming started working there from Day One – the day of its inauguration -- and became familiar with every aspect of its operations. This recording is a two-part programme in the RTHK series on old Hong Kong, hosted by Cheng Kai Ming and Wu Hao. The episodes focus on the history of Rediffusion with Chung as the special guest, and were broadcast on 15 and 22 November 2001.

Part 1

Part 1 covers the establishment of the Rediffusion Broadcasting Company; the day of the company’s opening (22 March, 1949), the programmes of that day and Chung’s participation; the building of Rediffusion’s first headquarters and its subsequent relocations; how Chung joined Rediffusion and the diversity of its programmes.

Part 2

Part 2 covers the strategies Rediffusion adopted to attract audience; Chung Wai Ming’s favourite science fiction dramas; the influence of radio on people’s everyday lives; Fang Rong, a broadcaster of the older generation; newspapers produced by Rediffusion and how they related to broadcasting; fire at Rediffusion in 1954.
