OBSERVATIONS | The rural landscape in the mid-1960s formed a clear pattern of villages surrounded by the fields they farmed. In the background here can be seen the looming walls of Wai Noi, the walled and moated part of Sheung Shui village. Usually settlements were built on higher, less fertile soil. Sheung Shui’s houses and halls sat on land approximately a metre above that of the surrounding fields, though they were still prone to flooding in major typhoons. |
