OBSERVATIONS | There were two rice crops a year. Some farmers grew a winter vegetable crop as well. World markets changed and by the 1970s it had become uneconomical to grow rice. The fields were either left fallow or rented out to vegetable farmers. Land prices were low, though well situated plots subsequently escalated dramatically in value as urban development in the New Territories got underway. |
