Oh! Here we are at Luen Sing Hotel and Yee Wo Restaurant on Hill Road!
Let me tell you that starting in 1894, there were a series of epidemics in Sheung Wan, and the Hong Kong Government decided to reorganize the Tai Ping Shan area. In 1903, the Government placed an order that all brothels at Possession Point had to move to the newly developed area of Shek Tong Tsui before 1906. If they didn’t move, their licenses wouldn’t be renewed. At the time, Shek Tong Tsui was a remote area. In order to compete for business, more and more brothels took the initiative to provide free rickshaw rides between Possession Point and West Quarry.
Following the relocation of the sex industry to West Quarry, Hong Kong’s star-rated restaurants opened here in succession. There were about 15 famous ones, including Tin Yat , Dong Tin, Kung Wo, Nam King , Kam Ling, Guang Zhou, To Yuen, Heung Kong , Dong Ting, Man Kwok ,Tai Wu and so on. And Luen Sing operated as both a restaurant and a hotel providing the convenience and the place, so clients who got drunk there could stay the night. These restaurants inherited the grand and posh style of Possession Point. Being the most luxurious Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong, they didn’t serve dim sum with tea or modest dishes for supper, but specialized in providing banquets attended by the beauties. Their settings were extravagant; their dishes meticulously made; their services were unbeatable. Every night, merchants, political leaders and public figures from different provinces would come for a visit, and at the banquet, the famed prostitutes would weave in and out flamboyantly. Each of the restaurants was famous throughout Hong Kong, Macau and various ports in Nanyang.
