The Masters who Provided the Staples
Because of the prosperity in Sheung Wan, the Chinese merchants needed erotic venues for entertainment and business meetings. So early Chinese brothels were gathered around Possession Point in Sheung Wan. There were about 30 brothels of various scales, and among them, Kam Shou Tong, Foon Tak, Ki Fa Zai and Sun Choi Fa were collectively branded as “The Big Four”. And Kam Shou Tong was the grandest and the most extravagant of them all. Its frontline personnel and behind-the-scene staff were all elites of the sex trade, rearing talents in the erotic industry for the next few generations to come. Accompanying the growth of the brothels were the luxurious Chinese restaurants cum wine houses in which customers hosted banquets attended by the beauties. At the time, the biggest ones included Tam Fa Lou, Yin Chong Lam, Heng Fa Lou and Zui Hing Lou, all of which were Hong Kong’s most prestigious Chinese restaurants. Today, many restaurants in the South of China still draw reference from their names and styles!
