The Masters who Provided the Staples
Wow! So wonderful. Never imagined that a bit of the flavors of yester-years are retained in today’s Bonham Strand area in Sheung Wan! In old Hong Kong, while Central was a world for foreigners, Sheung Wan was a hub for Nam Pei Hong’s North-South Traders, Chinese companies of various types, banks and merchandisers. The 12th Young Master, my “Tender long-time companion”, was the young master of a Nam Pei Hong. Nam Pei Hong companies engaged in trading Chinese food, oils, groceries and various types of commodities and merchandises. They operated their trading business across the South and the North of China, and some companies even expanded their business to Nanyang, Europe and the USA. Many of the owners were notably wealthy.
