Observation：With so many protective charms and gods, the home seemed very safe from harm, but prudent villagers were concerned that they might have failed to worship some gods, and that those so neglected might cause them trouble. The woman next door told me that this was why she worshipped Heaven, which encompassed all gods and therefore left out none. Here at new year she has set up an offering table in view of a small opening to the sky towards the front of her house, and she has offered fruit, candles, incense, tea and wine, as well as a cumquat plant.
