Observation：The Watch was administered by the Village Council, and acted as police force, fire brigade and rapid response team in emergency. It patrolled the village at night, and was paid for by an annual fee levied on households and based on the extent of the property which they had to protect. I was told that if property were stolen or damaged by fire or other disaster the Watch would pay compensation money.
