Canadian Pacific Steamships Limited was founded in 1881. Its fleets mainly travelled between Shanghai, Japan, North America and Hong Kong. At that time, ships to Europe set sail in Shanghai, and stopped over at Hong Kong before heading to Europe. Hong Kong was thus China's gateway to Europe and Southeast Asia.
