Remember Yau Ma Tei
Welcome to Remember Yau Ma Tei
This is a collection of oral histories from a group of inhabitants who remember the past lives and their present sentiment about Yau Ma Tei as a community.
In this light, the exhibition guide brings you to tour around in Yau Ma Tei and visit the "community habitats" of the inhabitants. 'Habitant' emphasizes the dynamic aspect of a place. "Community habitat" refers to the people's lives in the community, their interactions with it and emotions for it.
When visiting these habitats, you may wonder what community means, especially when you find that,
-The oral histories talk every little about the famous landmarks of Yau Ma Tei. People remember a place not because it has a famous landmark, but because they had a life in it.
-The habitats do not automatically make up itno a complete map if this place. Some parts of the palce are recounted with rich details while some have not much substance of importance. It is because people's memory of a place is built on the richness of one's life in it. No life, no memory.
Meanwhile, you may find a sense of familiarity in the visit. It is because the habitatas represent the memory of a place with rich experience and passion of the people. These are the substances that can be shared among poeple who have and have not lived there.
What is community? Different lives have different memories of it. Each of the accounts contribute a piece of jugsaw puzzle to a community map.
