Other than the bawds and prostitutes, each brothel supported the living of a team of staff. Besides the “Flour Water” I have mentioned earlier, there were the chefs at the kitchen, the maids who attended the prostitutes, the attendants who served the clients (the male attendant was called “Four Pieces Guy”, the female attendant was called “Auntie Hut Entrance”), the “Claws of Tortoises” who handled security and “prevented the hens from escaping”, the “Hall Supporters” who dealt with public relations and invited the wealthy men to patronize the camp, the performing band which was called “Sonorous Set of Eight Tones”, and the “private advisor” who took care of documents and accounting. Many private advisors were scholars of classic education in distress or young masters from Xi Guan. To promote the brothels, they would write rhymes which were both obscene and witty at the same time. They would also wrote elegant and refined love letters on behalf of the prostitutes to their clients or lovers. Hence, each big camp actually supported the living of about 100 people, including the prostitutes.
