Hong Kong was opened to foreign trade as a free port, meaning that all the people, capital, goods and information from other places were given free access to the colony. It came as an attraction to many people from around the world, including the Germans. Before the First World War there were about 300 Germanic populations in Hong Kong, most of them businessmen with deep pockets, while others were missionaries. For the lack of cultural and recreational venues in Hong Kong at that time, foreigners were wont to put up social centres for their own community. Club Germania was one of the grandest clubhouses built for this purpose.
