In the past, the area making up Central and Sheung Wan was a flat slope at the foot of Victoria Peak, singularly long and narrow. The coastal part was a shallow bay where small boats could moor. When the British Army officially landed in Hong Kong in 1841, it was at Shui Hang Hau (also known as Possession Point) in Sheung Wan that they stepped on. Having taken Hong Kong, the British Army established a military zone at the Admiralty waterfront and its adjoining hillside, while the colonial government opted for the hillside above Sheung Wan as its headquarters, hence the name “Government Hill”.
