Right beside the Pavilion was the Office of the Commodore of the Dapeng Brigade. The Dapeng Brigade, originated in the Dapeng City of the Dapeng Bay in Guangdong, was moved to the Walled City in 1839 under the mandate of Lin Zexu. The whole troop was promoted from the rank of “camp” to that of “brigade”, with the Commodore, who received orders directly from the commander-in-chief of the Guangdong Navy, being the chief.
The Office of the Commodore of the Dapeng Brigade was the largest edifice in the Walled City and, like the adjoining Office of the Kowloon Assistant Military Inspectorate, it had its own soldiers’ quarters. It was, therefore, not only the residence of the Commodore but also a workplace of both the chief and his soldiers. Outside of the Office were the gunpowder and ordnance magazines. After the Qing army was expelled from the Walled City, the abandoned Office became a bureau of medicine and epidemic prevention, and was eventually pulled down in 1936 under a large-scale demolition project.
