香港長期是英國的殖民地，經濟上對外開放，文化上對歐西特別寬容，西洋時尚，早在上世紀二三十年代，已經由中環一帶，向外散播。

1950年代，西洋潮流進一步滲入平民生活。

新一代的潮，由電影帶動。日戰前洋電影在本地放映的數字每年平均超過二百部。黃湛森抵港後，數字有增無減。慢慢，讀番書，看洋戲，玩舶來的呼拉圈和搖搖，在年輕人之中，變得理所當然。

新一代的潮，也由電台帶動。多謝前衛主持人Aileen Woods和Uncle Ray的忘情推介，黃湛森和同輩的年青人，天天靠近電台，面向歐西，貼近流行，學懂將Frank Sinatra、Bing Crosby、Elvis Presley與Benny Goodman一起兼聽，並且在搖頭擺腦之間，確認歐西流行曲在創作、演奏、歌唱、錄音，都不是香港或上海所能望其肩背。

電台廣播歐西流行歌曲，由聽覺開始，經過身軀，製造了新一代的口味和人格。
