黄湛森说，听音乐，他绝对兼收并蓄，其中对西洋古典音乐的爱，达至饥渴程度。这份爱，自幼播种，慢慢形成。

五十年代，黄湛森的五官还未定型，西洋古典音乐在民间也是新生事物。新人类遇上新事物，无案可稽，要前行，全靠摸索。

摸索，要看条件。黄湛森年轻时，家境并不富庶。买口琴，要储蓄。听唱片，要到初恋女友家中借用。听音乐，能够做到兼容并包，摸出真爱，要多谢一些人和物。

多谢香港电台，让他每天听到人间美乐，并学懂Shankar 与Schubert虽然各自修行，但同样开花。

多谢梁日昭，教他知道古典音乐，毫不神秘，莫扎特可以吹，民谣可以奏，好听的，就是音乐。

多谢黄湛森自己，坚持读书看报，自学乐理，自幼硬啃巴哈原谱，琴挑贝多芬小提琴协奏曲D大调。

多谢五十年代的香港，虽然号称沙漠，但坚持灌溉，拉拢大师轮流访港，拉阔音乐，同时拉阔了一代人的人生。

Haydn: The Seasons (节录) (1959)

1957年，中英管弦乐团(Sino-British Orchestra)正式易名香港管弦乐团(Hong Kong Philharmonic)，10月31日在香港大学陆佑堂举行音乐会。是晚演出曲目包括《秘密的婚姻》序曲和贝多芬第三钢琴协奏曲。高潮是管弦乐团跟香港圣乐团(The Hong Kong Oratorio Society)合作演出海顿的清唱剧《四季》(The Seasons)。
