In 1957, Wong Jum-sum got his first intimate encounter with Mandarin films when helping teacher Leung Yat-chiu record film music in the studio. On that occasion, Li Xiang-lan dazzled in her starring film role, mesmerizing Wong the teenager with her gorgeous look and magnetic voice. Gradually, ‘mesmerizing’ became the hallmark of Mandarin films. In 1959, The Kingdom and the Beauty grossed over 400,000 dollars at the box office, outperforming by a distance all other films of that year. Calendar Girl came second. It openly paid tribute to Mandarin pop songs, and with its bouquet of dance scenes, put Mandarin films firmly on the map of Hong Kong culture.
