Cantonese Opera Music

In the 1950s, the one true popular music in Hong Kong was Cantonese opera music. Gradually we saw variations. These were closely connected to developments in electronic media, in particular radio broadcast. In that period, the two radio stations worked with major entertainment newspapers to promote live broadcast of Cantonese opera performances, bringing its inimitable sound further into the homes of the common people. However, the same media also posed problems for the continuation of Cantonese operas in their traditional form, triggering off a new round of adaptation and reform.
