Cantonese Operas & Films

Young Wong Jum-sum was an avid Cantonese opera fan. From his many adventures in the theatres, he saw first hand a mini revolution unfolding. He saw in the bodies and performances of maestros like Hung Sin-nui, Ma Sze-tsang and Yam Kim-fai how selected Cantonese opera troupes responded to the challenges posed by the new electronic media to age-old practices of stage performance. They adapted the way Cantonese operas were sung, acted, choreographed and presented, thereby creatively continuing the projects of modernizing Cantonese operas that began in the 1930s.
