I am Wong Jim

In 1960, the first all-Hong Kong amateur singing contest took place. Thirty contestants entered the final. Among them was Wong Jum-sum. He feared losing, so adopted a pseudoname, calling himself Wong Jim. Naturally Wong Jim lost, and promptly disappeared from the cultural circuit for a time. Wong Jum-sum came back, continued to submit articles periodically, and acted on stage regularly. In 1965, Rediffusion TV put on a genre-defying cultural programme entitled The Youth Club. Wong Jim returned to host the program. His eloquence and learnedness struck a chord among critics. Soon he was named the Prince of TV. A mediocre hero of Hong Kong popular culture was born.
