After the failure of the Huizhou Uprising, Yeung opened a private school at his own residence at 52 Gage Street to support his family. He started teaching English. On 10th January 1901, at night, he was shot at home by Chen Lin, an assassin sent by the Qing court, reportedly in protection of his wife and children. He was buried under an unnamed gravestone in the Hong Kong Commentary in Happy Valley. A few months later Cheng Si-leung died of a stroke after attending a banquet dinner, but it was suspected that he was poisoned to death.

Mr. Sun, though never in good terms with Yeung, was said to be grief-stricken when he heard the news abroad.
